About

Valerie Yuwen Hsieh (b. 1994. Taipei, Taiwan) is a photographer working primarily in fashion and Fine-art photography. She currently lives and works in Taipei, with occasional work trips to Tokyo and London.

Her work is characterized by a particular style of storytelling that believes in subtleties rather than explicit narratives. The emotions and feelings her photos convey take precedence over clear-cut storylines, encouraging viewers to interact with her images in a highly personal and instinctual way. Heavily influenced by her interests in philosophy and psychology, the artist often conceptualise her messages with symbols and subtle references. The sentiment in her images were made to be felt, rather than understood.

Valerie takes an emotive approach to photography, one which seeks to negate stagnant modes of female representation within pop culture and media. Rather, she focuses on re-representing a diverse and genuine perspective on contemporary womanhood. She draws from documentary photography and creates work that lives on a fine line between “reality” and imagination
